But the real boost came in July 2001, when a Canadian company called Ivanhoe Mines found a large gold and copper deposit at Oyu Tolgoi (turquoise hill). Foreign investment in the country on explorations soared. And the great Mongolian gold rush began with mining companies from around the world coming to the Gobi desert.

But not only the mining companies, this gold rush has also changed some of the lives of the Mongolian poorest. Thousands of people, called the “Ninjas”, have left home to take up digging and sifting for gold full-time.

501 Vote(s)

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) will hold its first conference on investing in Mongolia. Regional experts will discuss the country’s economic outlook and investment potential, and executives from Mongolian public companies will discuss their businesses.

Mongolia is expected to become one of the world’s fastest growing economies over the next decade thanks to its immense resources and strategic position next to the world’s most dynamic market, China. According to the IMF, Mongolia’s GDP growth is expected to reach 7.6% in 2010 and it would average 20% per annum in 2013–2016 spurred by development of new mines and rising demand for commodities, particularly from its largest trading partner, China.

Descriptions of Nazism and xenophobia are unfair and unrepresentative, says Michael Aldrich

It is a pity that Tania Branigan overstates the influence of "Mongolian neo-Nazis" in her article (Mongolian neo-Nazis: Anti-Chinese sentiment fuels the rise of ultra-nationalism, 2 August). She says that "a new strain of Nazism has found an unlikely home" in Mongolia and that "ultra-nationalists are … becoming more sophisticated and, quietly, more powerful" here. To illustrate this assertion, Branigan's article carries an alarming photograph of six swastika-bedecked Mongolian skinheads rigidly standing to attention with their right arms thrust in a "Heil Hitler" salute.

As a regular visitor to Mongolia since 1993 and a resident in Ulan Bator over the past 18 months, I find this skewed depiction of life here to be demeaning and unfair to Mongolians.

17 Vote(s)
