CNNC Overseas Uranium Holding Ltd. Extends Its Offer for Khan Resources Inc.

TORONTO, ONTARIO, Apr 06, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- CNNC Overseas Uranium Holding Ltd. ("Offeror") and Khan Resources Inc. ("Khan") jointly announced today that the Offeror has extended its offer to acquire all of the outstanding common shares of Khan at C$0.96 in cash per share (the "Offer"). The notice of extension being sent to Khan shareholders amends the Offer dated February 25, 2010 to extend the expiry date from 5:00 p.m. (Toronto time) on April 6, 2010 to 5:00 p.m. (Toronto time) on May 25, 2010.

The Offer is conditional upon, among other things, the Offeror having obtained all required approvals from the Government of China or any regulatory authority in China that are necessary to complete the Offer. The Offeror has informed Khan that it is extending the Offer as it is awaiting approval of the Offer from the Chinese government.

Energy Resources Mulls London IPO, Shareholder Says

Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Energy Resources LLC, a closely held coking coal producer in Mongolia, is considering an initial public offering in Hong Kong or London, the majority shareholder said.

"It's just an idea at the moment, but we are looking to raise funds and an overseas listing is a good way to raise the profile of the company," Gankhuyag Adilbish, managing director of MCS Holding LLC, said in a phone interview. No bankers have been hired yet, Adilbish said.

Labour MP John Grogan highlighted the importance of the relationship between the UK and Mongolia.

Mr Grogan, who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Mongolia Group, said about 7,000 British tourists visit the country every year, and that the country's tourism industry had "great potential".

He said he was keen to see the introduction of direct flights between the UK and the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.

Mr Grogan also highlighted the UK's military links with the country, pointing out that Mongolians had served alongside British troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant said Britain was proud to be the first country to have opened up diplomatic relations with Mongolia.

He said the government was keen to do more to reinforce the relationship between the two countries.

Two objects reported crashed near Mongolian capital: UFO or engine parts?

Very little information accompanied a photo of what is claimed is an object that fell from the sky near the Mongolian capital, according to a report filed February 23 with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness database.

The report states that two objects fell near the Mongolian capital on February 19.

Green Global to acquire Mongolian iron ore for HK$192.6 mln

Feb. 23, 2010 (China Knowledge) - Green Global Resources Ltd has announced that it plans to spend HK$192.6 million to purchase a stake of approximately 10% in an iron ore firm called Golden Pogada from a Mongolia-based subsidiary controlled by China Railway Group Ltd.

Last year, Green Global Resources spent HK$1.76 billion to acquire a 90% stake in Golden Pogada.

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Mongolia’s billions of dollars worth of copper, gold, uranium and coal reserves promise the greatest influx of wealth for the country since Genghis Khan conquered much of the known world in the 13th century.

They also may spawn a crisis. Sudden prosperity can overwhelm an economy, exposing it to commodity-price swings. Mongolia’s leaders, some educated at Harvard and Cambridge, say they are determined to avoid this syndrome, known as “Dutch Disease” -- a sudden surge in wealth that ultimately hampers expansion.

Press Release: Statement by IMF Staff Mission to Mongolia

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, led by Steven Barnett, visited Ulaanbaatar during February 3-10, 2010, to hold discussions with the Mongolian authorities of the fourth review of the country’s Stand-By Arrangement (SBA). The SDR 153.3 million (about US$236 million) SBA was approved by IMF Executive Board on April 1, 2009 (see Press Release No. 09/110). At the conclusion of the visit, Mr. Barnett made the following statement:

“The IMF mission today reached a staff-level agreement with the Mongolian authorities on the conclusion of the fourth review under the SBA on the basis of the authorities’ continuing strong policy performance. IMF Executive Board is expected to consider the fourth review in the coming weeks. If the Board approves the completion of the review, the next disbursement under the program would be released to Mongolia in an amount of SDR 15.33 million (about US$24 million).

Feb. 12, 2010 (China Knowledge) - Kiu Hung Energy Holdings Ltd, formerly known as Kiu Hung International Holdings Ltd, has inked a memorandum of understanding with Wonder Return Ltd to purchase First Dean Holdings Ltd, which has three mines in a western province of Mongolia.

The Hong Kong-listed firm will pay between HK$1 billion and HK$1.4 billion in cash or by issuing bonds or notes.

The three mines have coal reserves of around 360 million tons in total.

Mongolia coal project still open to foreigners

Foreign mining companies are likely to remain involved in developing Mongolia’s huge Tavan Tolgoi coal project, in spite of government statements indicating that Ulan Bator would prefer to keep 100 per cent equity ownership.

A spokesman for Sükhbaataryn Batbold, the Mongolian prime minister, on Tuesday denied reports that a plan to auction 49 per cent of Tavan Tolgoi to foreign investors had been cancelled. “Plans to privatise Tavan Tolgoi have not been cancelled. We will announce a tender and we will choose which investors are suitable for us. The time of the tender has not been decided yet,” the spokesman said.

But the prime minister made clear at a press conference on Monday that he would prefer to abandon the auction. He said: “We have not ruled out foreign mining companies having a stake but our preferred option is complete state control.”

Mongolian PM confirms plan to scrap coal auction

ULAN BATOR, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Mongolia's decision not to auction a stake in the massive Tavan Tolgoi coal project will allow the nation a greater return on the deposit, Prime Minister Sukhbaatariin Batbold said on Monday, confirming an earlier Reuters report that the sale would be cancelled.

The government had previously planned to sell a 49 percent share in the Tavan Tolgoi deposit, billed as the world's largest untapped coking coal resource, but sources said last week that the $2 billion auction had been cancelled in favour of a plan to keep 100 percent in state hands.

Mongolia Hopes to List Mineral Assets in Overseas Markets

Mongolia may eventually list state-owned mineral assets in international stock markets so that the country can convert more of its natural resource wealth into cash, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Prime Minister Sukhbaatariin Batbold said that the poor, landlocked country is first studying the creation of three companies -- one for mining assets, another for energy assets and a third for infrastructure holdings.

The government would then look to float shares in these companies in London, New York or Hong Kong, before bringing them to Mongolia's domestic stock market, he said.

SouthGobi Energy Resources Ltd. and China Investment Corp. (CIC) announced on Monday that CIC will invest US$500-million in SouthGobi through a convertible debenture financing.

With another US$500-million in its pocket, SouthGobi will accelerate plans to expand production at Ovoot Tolgoi from 1.5 million tonnes a year to eight million, and build a mine at its nearby Soumber deposit. The company also wants to develop a rail link between Ovoot Tolgoi and the Mongolia-China border that could eliminate some congestion at the oft-closed border crossing.

Representatives of Ivanhoe Mines Ltd.'s $3 billion Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia have held talks with the government there for the past two weeks to forge an investment agreement, but there is no clear timetable for progress.

Resources companies have been awaiting a solid investment framework for years to mine Mongolia's copper, gold, coal and uranium riches. Talks to forge an investment deal dragged particularly after Mongolia's government in 2006 announced it would seek a stake of up to 50% in strategic mining projects, as well as imposing a windfall tax on company profits from copper and gold production.

There is one sentence that really puzzles me:
"MP Z.Enkhbold, the Chairman of the Committee, put question about the possibilities of Mongolia becoming one of the leading 5 nations with uranium reserve."
Does this mean they want to increase the Uranium in the ground? Pimp the numbers? I mean, there isn't much you can do about how much Uranium there is underneath your surface. Or is reserve th Uranium that has already been taken out?

H5 Bird Flu Found in Mongolian Swans

MONGOLIA - The veterinary authorities have reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that they have found what may be highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds.

The Mongolian veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 28 May to OIE, reporting the suspicious death of a group of swans.

Nine migratory swans were found dead at Doitiin tsagaan Lake in Arkhangai province on 22 May. A further bird was destroyed.

The presence of an H5 virus has been confirmed.

Workers strike at Centerra's Mongolia mine | Reuters

Centerra Gold (CG.TO) said on Tuesday that unionized workers at its Boroo gold mine in Mongolia have walked off the job demanding higher wages, prompting the company to suspend operations at the mine.
