Australia is to provide Mongolia with $1 million in humanitarian assistance as the central Asian nation tries to recover from the effects of severe weather conditions.

The death of more than 450,000 head of livestock following a recent drought and extreme winter temperatures in December was threatening the livelihoods of Mongolian herders, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said.
